"You can try using my original set up with a clear glass pot of water inside a larger empty pot so the light can shine all the way through the glass pot? I find that really helps with the images.
The last session I did, I used a saucepan inside a bread pan. The cat's head gives you an idea of the small size. Normally I've used much later pots.
This is my normal size. The black pot is from my slow cooker. I like to suspend the pot of water (so the bottom of the pans do not touch each other).
I don't use the heat from the stove. I just set it there to take advantage of the hood light.
When the light is allowed to pass all the way through the water, then reflect off the bottom of the empty pan, it gives depth to the images that I don't get when I use only a single pot of water. Though clearly, the single pot setup also works very well."
